Brandon Aiyuk escalates 49ers standoff with money post and tour video
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk added two more posts today, Thursday, to a social media campaign that has been running all week.
Aiyuk posted a video announcing he is “back on tour this fall,” while wearing a Commanders hat, and directed viewers to the Washington Commanders’ official website to purchase tickets to watch him work out.
A separate IG story showed him in a closet throwing stacks of cash on the floor, a pointed reference to the money the 49ers have paid him.
“What’s up, everyone? It’s your boy. I’m back in action and back on tour this fall,” Aiyuk said in the video. “Go to www.commanders.com to get your tickets and watch us rock out.”
Aiyuk is effectively untradeable while on reserve list
ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler gave the most direct assessment of where Aiyuk stands. “He’s lighting money on fire is what he’s doing,” Fowler said on ESPN. “Every time he puts an Instagram video out right now.”
Aiyuk is currently on the 49ers’ reserve/left squad list, which means he cannot be traded or released without filing paperwork with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Fowler reported that as of Thursday, that paperwork has not been filed. Teams around the league view him as “essentially untradeable right now,” and some believe that if and when he is cut, he may have to accept a veteran minimum deal given how the past several weeks have played out.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter added a separate layer of concern.
“I think every time he opens his mouth, he damages his standing with other teams, and he scares other teams from bringing him into their organization,” Schefter said. “And I just think he doesn’t realize that. He thinks he’s helping the situation. I don’t believe that to be the case.” Schefter noted concerns about Aiyuk existed within the Commanders organization before the 2026 NFL Draft and said those concerns “I would imagine still exist.”
Schefter’s point has been my thought. Let’s not talk about what he can contribute to any team that offers him a deal. Character-wise, he has devalued his own market with all the social media posting he has engaged in since the beginning of this month. I wouldn’t be surprised if no team offered him a contract even after the 49ers released him. Because I don’t think any team that cares enough about the locker room will go for the transaction.

NBC Sports’ Mike Florio raised the question of whether anyone is actually advising Aiyuk, noting that in 2020, agent Drew Rosenhaus severed ties with Antonio Brown at the height of his erratic behavior.
The 49ers have no financial incentive to rush a decision. Aiyuk has no guaranteed money remaining on his contract. San Francisco can let him sit on their roster, continue to absorb the attention his posts generate, and wait to see whether the Commanders develop enough genuine interest to make a trade viable.
