What Robert Kraft revealed about Christian Gonzalez’s contract offer changes the entire cornerback market
Christian Gonzalez took the field for the first day of Patriots training camp on Saturday, still without a new contract in place. Hours later, owner Robert Kraft told reporters at Gillette Stadium exactly how far New England is prepared to go to keep him.
“We love Christian Gonzalez,” Kraft said. “We love him as a player, as a person. That’s why we’ve made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL, and coincidentally, it’s the highest contract in the Patriots franchise history,” Kraft told reporters, per Ian Rapoport.

Kraft did not clarify whether “highest-paid” refers to total contract value, average annual salary, or both. Gonzalez is currently in the final year of his rookie deal, which includes an $18.1 million team option for 2027. The Patriots have made no confirmation of the specific numbers involved in the new proposal.
The current cornerback market has been moving quickly all offseason. Denver’s Patrick Surtain II sits near the top of the position after signing his own extension earlier in 2026. Seattle’s Devon Witherspoon has been in talks that could land him around $32 million per year, per Rapoport’s own earlier reporting on Good Morning Football. Sauce Gardner, Derek Stingley Jr., and Trent McDuffie have each briefly held the highest-paid cornerback title over the past 16 months before being surpassed. If Kraft’s characterization holds, Gonzalez would leapfrog all of them.
Gonzalez was the 17th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. His rookie season was limited to four games due to a shoulder injury, prompting early doubts about the pick. Of course, he answered those doubts emphatically in the years that followed, earning back-to-back second-team All-Pro selections and helping anchor a Patriots defense that reached Super Bowl LX in February. Across 34 career games, he has recorded 145 tackles, 24 pass deflections, and two interceptions.
The financial logic for New England moving now is straightforward. Drake Maye becomes eligible for his own extension after the 2026 season, and league sources told SportsBoom in June that it would be shortsighted for Kraft not to lock in Gonzalez’s cost before that negotiation reshapes the team’s cap picture.
Kraft has spent aggressively since Bill Belichick’s departure, adding Milton Williams, Harold Landry, and Carlton Davis to the defense in 2025 free agency.
Gonzalez has not publicly responded to Kraft’s comments. Training camp continues in Foxboro with his contract status still the most closely watched storyline on the roster.
