University of Georgia starting quarterback Gunner Stockton found himself in a rather unusual spotlight Thursday as he stepped onto the political stage at President Trump’s economic rally in Rome, Georgia.
Stockton, who enters his second year as the University of Georgia’s starting signal-caller as the 2026 college football season approaches, was part of a group of notable Georgians who met President Trump on the tarmac at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport as the economic rally was about to get underway. The economic rally was held at the Coosa Steel Corporation in Rome, Georgia.
The reason for President Trump’s visit was the special election for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, which is set for March 10.
What was unexpected was the fact that a current college quarterback was standing on the same stage as President Trump. President Trump did not hesitate in making the University of Georgia quarterback a part of the moment, and the brief moment between the two was one that drew a great deal of attention. The moment was captured in a post from Sports Fountain on X.

Herschel Walker, Burt Jones, and a Loaded Stage in Rome, Georgia
It was not just the University of Georgia’s starting quarterback who was on the same stage as President Trump. Standing alongside the University of Georgia quarterback was the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and the current U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas, Herschel Walker.
Walker was the Republican Senate candidate for the state of Georgia in the 2022 election. The two met President Trump as he stepped off Air Force One and was greeted by the former U.S. Senator and the Small Business Administration head, Kelly Loeffler.
When President Trump brought the University of Georgia quarterback and the Heisman Trophy winner onstage, he drew a contrast between the two Georgians who are known for their gridiron prowess.
“Gunner is a big star and a really talented quarterback. But I heard, much more importantly, he’s a Trump fan. So, he was standing at the plane.”
Trump also made light of the physical build of these two athletes. “I’m looking at these two guys, they’re like steel. I’m hitting them in the shoulders, and it’s like my hand isn’t the same.”
Even Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, who is a former football player for the University of Georgia and received the full endorsement of Donald Trump for the state’s 2026 gubernatorial election, worked the quarterback into a speech. “How many SEC rings do you have?” Jones asked the quarterback.
Stockton Kept It Simple, But the Moment Still Resonated with Georgia Fans
Stockton did not make a political speech. When given the mic, the quarterback kept it simple. “This is a great opportunity just to meet a president and Donald Trump. This is an awesome experience, and I’m just glad to be here.”
Reactions from the fans varied. Saturday Down South noted, It’s worth noting that the appearance carries no political endorsement.
With the Bulldogs being ranked as one of the top teams in the nation going into the 2026 season, and even projected to win the SEC title for the second time under Kirby Smart, the quarterback’s path to the top has yet to be written. Thursday was a chapter nobody could have imagined.
