KAT says he had 12 hours to pack 9 years of life before moving to New York

The trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the New York Knicks has been analyzed as a basketball transaction for months. Towns recently gave a different kind of account of what it felt like to live through.

In a clip circulating widely on Tuesday, the Knicks’ starting center described being told at 8:59 p.m. that he had 12 hours to leave Minnesota and report to New York.

“I had a beautiful house that has nine years of memories and all these amazing artifacts of my career,” Towns said. “You’re told it’s 8:59 PM, like hey man, you got 12 hours to go pack up and go to New York. Then you have no place to live, and you’re now used to being in a big house with your own life to now you’re locked in a hotel room.”

The Timberwolves had drafted Towns first overall in 2015. He spent his entire nine-year NBA career in Minnesota before the October 2024 trade sent him to New York alongside Donte DiVincenzo and a future first-round pick in exchange for Julius Randle, Jalen Brunson’s contract structure flexibility, and additional pieces.

He has also spoken at length this postseason about his late mother, Jacqueline Cruz, who passed away in April 2024, and how the 12 hours he had to process the Minnesota trade came while he was already processing significant personal loss.
